Rohit Sharma has sent a clear message to those speculating about his retirement after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During a live interview in the fifth match between India and Australia, he addressed the rumors, saying, “I’m not playing this match, but that doesn’t mean I’m retiring.” Mai kahi jaa nahi raha.

Rohit Sharma has clarified that he is neither retiring from cricket nor stepping down as India’s captain. After the cricket world was abuzz with speculation following his decision to skip the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney, Rohit addressed the rumors. He firmly stated that he was not taking a break, opting out, or being excluded from the team. Instead, he described his decision as “standing down” for the match, putting an end to all the speculations.

During the lunch break on Day 2 of the Sydney Test, Rohit Sharma opened up about his decision to skip the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speaking to Star Sports, Rohit clarified, “I stood down, that’s what I would say.”

Why Did Rohit Step Aside?

Rohit explained that his decision was based on his recent poor performance with the bat. He had only scored 31 runs across five innings in three Tests. While discussing his struggles with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Rohit shared his honest thoughts:
“I wasn’t scoring runs, and the team needed players in form. You can’t carry players who aren’t performing for too long. I felt it was my responsibility to let the coach and selectors know how I was feeling.”

The selectors gave Rohit the freedom to decide. After much thought, he decided to step aside for the benefit of the team. “It was tough, but it was the right choice for the team to move forward,” he said.

A Tough Year for Rohit

At 37, Rohit Sharma has had an incredible career, especially in white-ball cricket. However, his Test performances have dipped sharply. In his last eight Tests, Rohit managed only 164 runs at an average of 10.9. His 2024 Test average dropped to 24.76, making it his worst year in this format.

Despite these challenges, Rohit emphasized that he has no intention of retiring from any format. He remains focused on improving his batting and making a strong comeback.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

Rohit reassured fans that this decision does not mean he is stepping down as India’s captain or retiring from cricket. “I’m not stepping aside as captain. I’m just stepping aside from this Test because I’m not scoring enough runs,” he said. Rohit also noted that form is temporary and believes he can bounce back in the future.

When Star Sports host Jatin Sapru praised Rohit’s selfless decision, Rohit humorously interrupted, saying, “I’m not going anywhere,” leaving everyone in laughter.

Leading from the Sidelines

Although he sat out of the Test, Rohit continued to show leadership. On Day 2, during the drinks break, he walked onto the field wearing a substitute player’s bib to have a detailed conversation with stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. His guidance came after India made a strong comeback by taking three wickets early in the session.
